After the Water Loss
After a water emergency, it is natural for a person to want to "do something." While timely action can be a great help, it is also true that improper or delayed action can make restoration more difficult and even cause further damage. Following these tips can be very beneficial after your home has been damaged by water intrusion:
To minimize damage - Do:
- Remove as much standing water as possible by blotting or mopping.
- Eliminate the source of the water by shutting off your water supply (if necessary).
- Turn off electrical supply to affected wet areas.
- Wipe water from wood furniture.
- Remove area rugs from wet carpeting.
- Place aluminum foil, Styrofoam, or wooden blocks between furniture legs and carpet.
- Prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
- Hang draperies and pin up furniture skirts to prevent their contact with the wet floor. This will prevent dye transfer.
- Prepare the damaged area for the presence of restoration crews.
- Be aware that time is critical!
To avoid further damage - Dont:
- Use your vacuum cleaner to remove water.
- Use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors, especially on wet concrete.
- Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.
- Turn on the HVAC system if it has come in direct contact with water.
- Put wet contents on top of dry ones.
- Leave books or magazines on wet floors as the dyes may transfer.
