Second, proper documentation immediately pursuant to a loss event is critical to helping your insurance company value your loss and arrive at a fair settlement. At a minimum, you should consider doing the following:
- Take Photographs and Video - of affected areas and damaged goods
- Keep a journal - Whom did I speak with and what was said?
- Prove your case – most replacement coverages are for “like kind and similar quality”
- Keep a sample of your carpet or any other damaged building materials
- Do not throw any content items away until you have reached a settlement
- Gather receipts, plans and specifications relevant to any damages
- Get estimates – for both building repairs and the replacement of contents
